The Importance of Back-To-School Dental Checkups
Believe it or not, the new school year is just around the corner! It’s that time of the year again - the kids are going back to school. Don’t forget to include a dental check-up and cleaning on your back-to-school checklist! This is just as important as your child’s back-to-school physical and other doctor appointments. Regular dental checkups are essential to avoid tooth decay and cavities.
Back-To-School Checklist
New toothbrush
Restock floss and toothpaste supplies
Plan tooth-friendly lunches and snacks
Buy a good quality water bottle
Check mouthguard
Schedule a dental check-up
Here are a few reasons why back-to-school dental checkup is so important:
There may be hidden problems. 1-5 school-age children have undiagnosed tooth decay. Now is a great time to address those issues before they become a bigger problem.
Learn how to brush. A back-to-school appointment allows the dental team to teach your child proper techniques and check that their current efforts are up to par.
Mouth protection. If your child plays, they may benefit from a sports mouthguard.
Preventive treatment. We have all been snacking like crazy. An application of fluoride from a dental professional is just what the doctor ordered.
Here are some of the dental care tips for parents:
Schedule an appointment with the dentist and/or hygienist. Ask them about preventive care like fluoride treatments and sealants. The fluoride helps to protect the tooth against cavities. The sealants are used to seal the grooves in the teeth, preventing bacteria from creating cavities. These will help keep teeth strong and reduce the likelihood of cavities.
Make brushing and flossing fun! Let your kids pick their toothbrushes and toothpaste. This will get them more excited about brushing. Set a specific time for those routines in your daily schedule. Figure out exactly when your kids will be brushing their teeth. It is good to brush their teeth after breakfast and before getting dressed into their school uniform, as well as right before bed (after all the unplanned snacking is done).
Pick the right snacks avoiding candies and granola bars. Try to pack snacks like baby carrots, celery sticks, cheddar cheese, and various fruits.
Back to school may also include a return to gym classes and organized sports. We strongly encourage parents to consider a fitted mouth guard to prevent injuries. We fit custom mouthguards that fit teeth properly and protect the teeth, lips, and tongue from trauma.
